Tips for Maintaining Your Internet Connection

Some questions are frequently asked at our support desk. This is a short list of tips on what to do and what not to do based on that list of frequently asked questions. Follow up on these tips and your Internet connection will stay up and running in perfect condition. These tips are to be applied to all connections via a wall outlet for a network cable. For xDSL and WiFi-users, some of these tips may not apply, but most of them are generally useful.

Do’s and Don’ts for the Internet Connection

Do’s
  • Keep all your equipment up-to-date.
  • Install a virus scanner and update it regularly.
  • Use a wireless router if you want to connect via WiFi.
  • Make sure the security of your wireless network is sufficient; you are responsible for any misbehavior through your Internet connection.
  • In case of issues, disconnect any network equipment and check your connection via a network cable. Note that we do not provide support for non-Utelisys network equipment.
  • Always use the contact details provided to reach out to support.
  • When emailing support, provide sufficient information, including your contact details, phone number, room number, and a clear description of the issue.
  • Register all your equipment on your Internet connection. If your router cannot register itself, contact support via phone or email. Provide your room number, the router’s brand, and keep the router connected until you are notified that it is registered. You may need to reboot your router afterward.
  • If your room number on the registration portal does not match your actual room number, report this to the support desk.
Don’ts
  • Don’t connect switches; use a wireless router instead.
  • Don’t use ‘WiFi Amplifiers’ or ‘-repeaters’; use a wireless router instead.
  • Don’t connect Wireless Access Points; use a wireless router instead.
  • Don’t connect a router incorrectly. Always use the ‘WAN’ or ‘Internet’ port (usually distinctively colored) to connect to the wall outlet.
  • Don’t use a (DSL) Modem as a replacement for a wireless router unless it has an extra ‘WAN’ port.
  • Don’t connect via both wireless and wired networks simultaneously. Use only one connection type to avoid network loops.

Frequently asked questions

How can I ensure my Internet connection stays stable and secure?
  • Keep all your equipment up-to-date.
  • Install a virus scanner and update it regularly.
  • Use a wireless router to connect via Wi-Fi instead of directly connecting other devices.
  • Always use the ‘Public Network’ setting for your Internet connection if you’re not using a router.
What should I do if my Internet connection is not working properly?
  • Disconnect any network equipment not provided by Utelisys.
  • Test your connection using a network cable and disable Wi-Fi temporarily.
  • Reboot your router by pulling the power cord for five seconds. Do not press the reset button if you have an xDSL modem.
  • If the problem persists, contact your building’s Internet service administrator or reach out to Utelisys support with your contact details, room number, and a clear description of the issue.
What network devices should I avoid using?
  • Do not connect network switches; use a wireless router instead.
  • Avoid using Wi-Fi amplifiers or repeaters.
Do not connect additional Wireless Access Points.
  • Never connect a router the wrong way—only use the WAN or Internet port (usually highlighted in a distinct color).
Can I use both wired and wireless connections at the same time?
No, always use either a wired connection or a wireless connection, but not both simultaneously. Combining them may create network loops and cause connectivity issues.
